A Festive Day to Bike to Work

Not many outdoor parties begin at 7 a.m., have more wheels than people and feature coffee in the beverage place of honor, but the place to socialize early Thursday in Albany was the Bike to Work Day event on the Ohlone Greenway.

Dozens of bike riders stopped for refreshments, giveaways and climate-friendly comraderie at the Bike to Work Day "Energizer Station" in Albany Thursday.

The annual event, initiated by the East Bay Bicycle Coalition 20 years ago, has spread around the Bay Area.

In Albany, Albany Strollers & Rollers and other biking enthusiasts transformed the Ohlone Greenway next to Marin Avenue into an oasis of refreshments and encouragement between 7-9 a.m.

Also lending support were three local bike shops – Blue Heron Bikes, Wheels of Justice and Berkeley Bikes & Skateboards – who volunteered to be there with work stations.

Wheels of Justice, which used to be Solano Avenue Cyclery, also served as a late afternoon Energizer Station, offering giveaway tote bags containing a water bottle, Clif Bars, a lanyard and other items.
