Activists Plan 'Short-Form' Occupation of Gill Tract on May 11

Occupy the Farm is organizing an afternoon of farming activites followed by an overnight campout, the group's website says.

"Ocupy the Farm" activists plan a "short-form occupation" of the Gill Tract on Saturday, May 11, according to their website.

The group plans to gather in front of Albany City Hall at noon, then head to the nearby University of California-owned property for "farming (of course), your friends and neighbors, skill-shares, a one-night campout, and more!," their announcement says.

Participants are asked to bring "tools (shovels, digging forks, trowels, sun hat, gloves), drinking water and stories to share."

The following day, Sunday, the group plans to gather at Esperanza Gardens in San Francisco.

Activists took over the University of California-owned research field on April 22, 2012, with the goal of turning the space into an urban farm that was open to the community.

University of California Police cleared activists from the area, near Marin and San Pablo avenues in Albany, on May 14, 2012. Police arrested 10 activists that day, after earlier naming more than a dozen people in a civil lawsuit related to the occupation.

Costs associated with the occupation, including police, cleanup and other items, totaled nearly $383,000, university and City of Albay officials estimated last June.
