AHS Wins State 'Civic Learning' Award
Albany High received an Award of Distinction in California's new Civic Learning Awards program. It was one of five schools in the state so honored at a ceremony in Sacramento Thursday. Three schools won Awards of Excellence.
Albany High School has won a Award of Distinction in a new state of California program recognizing high school excellence in "Civic Learning."
The school was one of five to receive Awards of Distinction in a ceremony Thursday in Sacramento. The awards were announced by state Supreme Court Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.
Three schools won the highest honor, the Award of Excellence, while 14 received Awards of Merit.

"Special recognition is due to the many teachers, families, and administrators who help Albany High prepare its students so well to take their positions as leaders both in the United States and across the globe," said AHS Principal Ted Barone in a notice on the school website. "Congratulations!"
The school was honored for three areas of civic learning: the freshman debates, varied and active student organizations; and student involvement in school and district governance.

Attending the announcement ceremony in Sacramento was former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
