Mad Mark's Castle at the bulb is said to be specially oriented for the winter solstice. Also, there is a solstice gathering in December at the stones arranged as a solar calendar on the hilltop at Cesar Chavez Park at the Berkeley Marina:

Golden Gate Fields' parking lot is the best location for moments like these. Great pic!

I have an almost identical shot from last night!

Here's my map showing where to go each day for the Golden Gate centered sunset treat:

Here's the post that started it all in early December: Doug Donaldson wrote Albany Patch with an alert for folks who hate to miss a beautiful sunset. (And who does??) He wrote: "This is the time of year when the sunset is centered on the Golden Gate. It only happens a few weeks before the winter solstice and then again a few weeks after the solstice. To prove my point, I am attaching a photo I took this evening from a short distance south of the Albany Beach. People may want to know that they could be in for a sunset treat tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that, etc. It could be worth a special trip to the waterfront." [I've decided to remove it to make this a more general gallery for your favorite sunset moments.]

These photos are spectacular. Can we make an Albany sunset calendar for next year? Might be a great fund raiser for some group.

Doug, re. #24, you made my wish come true! I caught a glimpse of the water at twilight last night and hoped that someone, somewhere was taking a picture of it which they would share with me! Thank you!

I love how one can see the setting winter sun move further and further south relative to the Golden Gate Bridge as the photo dates approach the winter solstice, and then start moving north again after the solstice in January.

Me, too, Mary! I've taken photos a month apart showing just that. Same with sunrise. Makes you feel rooted to the planet.

I'm not certain but I seem to remember from a trip to Cal last year that the architectural axis of Sather Tower (Campanile) aligns with the center point of Golden Gate Strait (though not necessarily with the bridge itself built 20 yrs later) which runs down the east-west line of Schlessinger Way on the campus....anyone have photos of December sunsets from the observation deck?

Remarkably dramatic shots, Eric. I'm surprised at the resolution for such a wide field of view. Very nice use of the tool. Thanks.

Thanks, Jaden! I have to say, I'm very impressed with the iphone 4s camera. It takes great pictures for a smartphone.

This gallery, by the way, has many photos I find to be VERY breathtaking. Every post is a fabulous opportunity to see what we might have missed by beholding it through the eye of a neighbor. One neighbor, identified only as 'lazyeyedude' and by his flickr photostream, posted some such photos last year. I checked out that photostream today and found this image (url below), in particular, to be a FABULOUS visual drama -- a rendering WELL worth seeing at http://www.flickr.com/photos/lazyeyedude/5375527329

Gorgeous photos. I especially like the January 5, 2011. It might just be my new desktop background. I hope that's okay with you, Diane.
