Safeway Study Session Comes in June
Mark your calendars to learn about the CEQA review process for the new Safeway grocery store planned for Solano Avenue.
[Editor's Note: This meeting will be rescheduled, but a new date has not yet been set.]
The Planning & Zoning Commission will hold a study session on June 14 regarding the application to build a new Safeway store at 1500 Solano Ave.
The session, set for 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, will include a design review and discussion of the "Planned Unit Development" designation, but will not include any final decisions about the project, according to a city notice released Monday.
(The notice is attached here as a PDF.)
The application involves a 63,411 square foot grocery store and retail shop development.
Commissioners will discuss the CEQA review process for the project.
If you would like more information about the application, the Community Development Department can be found at 1000 San Pablo Ave., or by phone at 510-528-5760. Email Planning Manager Jeff Bond at jbond@albanyca.org for more information.
Plans, and all documents related to the project, are available for review online.

Safeway is an eye sore on vibrant Solano Ave. It takes away from other local markets which provide fresh, local foods and is out of place in a city that prides itself on being a green city. No other town would put a massive, corporate business such as Safeway in their downtown area and it's too bad that Albany did.

Safeway corporate headquarters are in nearby Pleasanton. Compared to many things they are pretty local and employ a lot of "local" Bay Area people. I fail to see how they would be considered bad.

The current Safeway store on Solano is way beyond dated, and I am grateful Safeway wants to redo it, enough to spend five years trying to get to redo it. But contrary to V's unsupported claims that Safeway "takes away from other local markets," the Exec Director of the Solano Ave Assn (which represents many local merchants and is very interested in the vibrancy of Solano) has said a new Safeway can serve as an anchor store that will attract more shoppers and benefit other businesses on the Avenue. Quoting from the SAA site: "The Solano Avenue Association is in full support of the Safeway Store expansion and thinks it is long overdue." I trust SAA to know about such stuff, plus they put their name on their opinion.

Safeway on Solano has been there a very long time, long before expensive houses and high income households. It might not be all that green, but it's where I see the Senior 'Shopping Bus ' on it's regular shopping run for seniors. it serves a need. The staff are kind and friendly. It's far from being a posh store. but so what? It's part of Albany history.

No, "v" is right. Albany shouldn't have any grocery stores. Everyone should be required to scrounge "local" foods or if they are so inclined, grow their own only. I have great recipes for homemade toilet paper and personal hygiene products and medication. No one needs grocery stores!!
No, wait. If you need that stuff you must walk or bicycle *only*, to the next nearest town to shop for that stuff. No need to keep jobs or your money in Albany. Too much of an eyesore.
Are you serious?
