Shortly before 4 p.m. July 5, a minivan plowed through the plate glass window of a popular sushi restaurant at 1647 Solano Ave. in North Berkeley.

Two women eating at the window table in Sushi 29 sustained minor cuts from the shower of broken glass, but there were no serious injuries to customers or employees, restaurant manager Eddy Wong said.

The crash was reported at 3:51 p.m., police said.

Accidents like this on Solano are rare but not unheard of, say residents.

"Maybe we should ask the city to put up some plants in concrete, or cast stone planters, on the sidewalk," Wong said.

Albany resident Ingrid Nelberg Klopp reported the accident to Albany Patch on Facebook. She said she heard the crash from her garden nearby.

"When the sirens started up about five minutes after, I made my way over there. For some reason I drove... and as I passed Sushi 29, the van was still half inside the restaurant and half out."

According to images posted on the Sushi 29 Facebook page, the involved vehicle appeared to be a Lexus SUV.

Klopp said there were numerous emergency vehicles on the scene, but she wasn't sure if there had been any injuries.

According to The Daily Cal, two "female customers were sent to the hospital while the driver suffered no injuries."

It wasn't the first such crash on Solano this summer.

"A few weeks ago a car further down on Solano," said . "It actually went into the salon and damaged an interior wall."

No one was injured in that incident.

A user posting as "Sushi 29" wrote that the restaurant had been hit a second time in the past month: "Just not too many people notice there is a dent in the lower wall of the dentist office right next to our restaurant, which I was told yesterday ... was hit by an old man within the last couple of weeks too."

According to a notice posted on Sushi 29's Facebook page, the restaurant is closed until further notice.
