Column: Solano Copy Center Bids 'Adieu' to The Avenue

Click the "Keep me posted" button below this story for an email alert when we write about Solano Avenue.

[Editor's Note: Louie Jauregui, owner of Solano Copy Center wrote to let us know that he is retiring. The shop, which has operated on Solano Avenue for nearly a quarter-century, will close on May 24. Read more about Anna and Louie here.] My daughter Anna and I are very grateful to our friends of Albany, Kensington, Berkeley, Richmond, El Cerrito and Emeryville, for the amazing support we received during the almost 24 years we were in business. I must say that our journey throughout these years has definitely not been a "sentence," but a joyful experience. We enjoyed all the people we served and will miss everyone. I have chosen to retire while I am still healthy and able to join my wife Anita who, six years ago, retired from 33 years of …

So what does Albany need to do to attract business? There are too many empty store fronts and too few shops where we can actually buy what we need.   more ›

* What I *did* like about this week's was that it was definitely "news you can use" -- I had no idea Albany HAD so many outdoor seating spots. I know that As You Wish has lots of fans and I've often seen people out there -- it's also VERY Albany, with its school donations and other neat efforts. Seems totally legit to me!   more ›

I think I would have preferred Thrift Town or Salvation Army. Goodwill have lately been overstocked with returns from Target that sell for almost full price. I am dissapointed with them. Hopefully this store doesn't follow that model.   more ›

Column: Solano Avenue and its Neighbors

Albany Patch welcomes guest columns and letters to the editor. Email albany@patch.com for details. Click the "Keep me posted" button below for updates on stories about Solano Avenue.

Is Solano Avenue losing or gaining the business of its residential roommates? Modeling respect is good for business.   In response to regular complaints from residents bordering Solano Avenue, some residents have formed neighborhood “associations” to organize and address issues of concern. This letter is an effort to address, define and minimize the impact felt in bordering neighborhoods. We can currently identify four specific “hot spots” and can name over a dozen more turbulent sectors. Solano Avenue is highly unusual in that there is a delicate balance between the proximity of businesses on the Avenue and the homes directly adjacent. In addition, there are street level apartments directly on the Avenue and some residents live above the …

UC to Occupy the Farm: 'We're at a Fork in the Road'

University of California representatives met with members of Occupy the Farm on Thursday. No resolution was reached. Click the "Keep me posted" button below for an update when we publish future stories on this topic.

The fate of the Gill Tract remains undecided after a Thursday night meeting between about a dozen people representing both the University of California at Berkeley and urban farming activists known as Occupy the Farm. The two sides met to discuss a possible resolution after the occupiers took over a university-owned agricultural research field in Albany in late April. The university has maintained the position that the "tent city" used by activists, while they retain control of the land and develop their farm activities, must be dismantled. University spokesman Dan Mogulof said Friday afternoon that Thursday night's private meeting was a "frank and forthright exchange of information and perspectives." He continued, however, that "the only …

John, Jo-Anna, I have been concerned as well about what would happen if one of the "farmers" got their foot mangled in a roto-tiller. I suspect they would complain to daddy who would hire a lawyer to sue UC. But the thing to keep in mind with the tree-sitters and (so far) the Gill Tract occupiers, is that time is on the side of UC--right up until it's not. The tree-sitters didn't actually impede …   more ›
