Come join a fun group run as we gear up for the official Jack LaLanne Day next month (9/26). See my recent patch article for background:  Living Exercise Legend Inspires Fitness for All

 Here's a brief workout plan:

  • Meet at parking lot at start of Strawberry Canyon fire trail (just up the road from the pool, before the botanical gardens -- here's a map).
  • Meet at parking lot & head out by 12:15.
  • Easy jog from parking lot to bottom of connector.
  • Upper body functional training by the sun dial.
  • Run up connector: Forward, backward, forward. Then down.
  • Down Panoramic Dr. to Arden stairs & back up to trail.
  • Another upper body set (time-permitting).
  • Return down trail to parking lot.

More About Strawberry Canyon Firetrail

Strawberry Canyon Firetrail

Strawberry Canyon Firetrail

Gayley Rd & Bowles Hall, Berkeley, CA

The Strawberry Canyon Firetrail is adjacent to Memorial Stadium on the eastern end of the UC Berkeley campus. It runs along Centenial Road, with an access point a half of a mile up the road on Strawberry Canyon.

The seven-mile (round trip) trail is a favorite among denizens and visitors of Berkeley alike. The climb offers a number of challenges for runners, including a steep 30-degree slope called The Connector. It is rated a seven on the difficulty scale, but if one is not acclimated to the Bay Area's slopes, it may feel more like a ten. Those up to the challenge find it's well worth it. With its spectacular views of the Bay Area, hikers otherwise scale it one step at a time, coupled with friendly chat or walking pets.

I posted this event just last night -- a bit late. Next time I'll give more of a lead.

The workout was fun today! A co-worker and I and hopped on our bikes from our office near Emeryville Marina, though it was just I that went all the way up to Strawberry Cyn (got there in record time: ~22 min). Running backwards up that steep connector (even part way) is a primo workout for the backs of your legs & glutes, btw!

Some observations: Excellent weather (sunny, though it was about 10° cooler in E'ville compared to the canyon). Also lots of interesting activity at Cal today as it was their 1st day of classes.

Remember that JLLDay (and the check-in days such as today) are for reaffirming your own personal commitment to better health by doing something positive for your fitness and/or nutrition. What you decide to do is entirely up to you -- be creative. It doesn't have to be a major feat, just something a little challenging, a little bit of stretch. Baby steps in the right direction is all we're looking for here.

Crossing fingers for cooperative weather on 9/26 and hoping to see some folks out there for the group bike ride/workout then. For the latest updates, follow JLLDay on Twitter or Facebook (see links to these at http://JLLDay.org ).
