Food Bank Hosts Biggest Volunteer Shift Ever on MLK Day of Service

The Food Bank's biggest volunteer day EVER was Monday, MLK Day. Here's how you can help alleviate hunger in the year ahead.

"No individual or nation can be great if it does not have a concern for 'the least of these.'" — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our 4th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service was truly incredible! It was the Alameda County Community Food Bank's single-largest volunteer shift ever.

With 195 volunteers from local scout troops, churches, schools and businesses, we sorted, packed, bagged and boxed more than 40,000 pounds of food in just three hours.

Community members also dropped by with bags of food donations — like tuna, cereal, soup and beans — throughout the morning.

Volunteers bagged pears, green apples, and red apples together. They also checked expiration dates and package quality on eight tons of holiday food-drive donations. Though they accomplished a lot, we still need help from volunteers every day. You can learn more about volunteering in the new year by clicking here.
