Almost 100 people participated in the 2012 Albany Community Triathlon a week ago Saturday.
This year’s “super sprint” event, a sequel to the 2008 Centennial Tri, featured a 400M swim in the new AHS Aquatic Center, a 10K bicycle ride around the Memorial Park/AHS block, and a 3K run.
The overall men’s winner was Steve Fung who finished in 35:39 (min./sec.). Susan Parkinson was the first woman finisher with a strong time of 36:14.
Also recognized were the oldest man and woman finishers (David Patterson Sr. and the woman wished to not be named) and the youngest kids (Joey Fern and Gabriella Tenret).
Allan Maris was actually the oldest participant but deferred because he is a committee member. For a full listing of participants and times, see the finishers list (attached as a PDF).
The event encourages physical fitness, according to Committee members Allan Maris, Jeff Shea, Steve Trutane, and Sarah Whitmer. Information was available at AlbanyTri.com, and people registered at Active.com. Proceeds from the event are being donated to PAHS (Promoting Albany High Sports).
The following businesses and organizations generously sponsored the event: Albany Community Foundation, Albany Lions Club, Solano Avenue Cyclery, Transports, Blue Heron Bikes, and Albany Ford/Subaru. Many volunteers helped make this event possible, including Albany Middle School students, Patricia Low–AUSD School Board, the AHS Mountain Bike Club, AHS Key Club members, plus other hardworking folks, including: Brandon Loveland, Alan Eckart, Chris Donahue, Ken McKroskey-Wait, Jim Quinn, and Kim Trutane. Other contributions came from Monterey Market, Lucky Store, and REI. Special thanks to the Albany Maintenance Department, the Albany Community Development Department, and to all the neighbors who moved their vehicles to ensure a safe event.
