Albany Police Actiities League Bicycle Rodeo Brings Smiles

The Albany Police Activities League (APAL), in partnership with the Albany Police Department, hosted our bicycle rodeo on Saturday, May 18. Albany Police Officers were on hand to give young bike riders free helmets to insure safe riding. Assistance in getting the correct fit was provided by Albany Strollers and Rollers (AS&R). Besides offering safety tips for both motorists and cyclists, AS&R hosted the blender bike. The smoothies made with pedal power were enjoyed by both those who made them and those who merely sampled them. Cycles of Change provided safety checks and minor repairs for bikes. The young cyclists experienced the confidence course which was staffed by another member of Cycles of Changes. On this course riders learned about traffic safety through a variety of stations. They learned hand signals, to be aware of cars and trucks on the road, and how to ride in a straight line. “Crime dog McGruff” made several appearances. One of the highlights of the day was the performance of Pete Brandt, a professional BMX stunt rider. He mesmerized the crowd with amazing spins ending his performance with a jump over 5 volunteers lying on the ground. Two expert skateboard riders also demonstrated their tricks and jumps. Safety was emphasized at all times, with participants being reminded to always wear a helmet while biking or skate boarding. Beautifully painted faces and arms were seen on many of the children due to the face painting skills of Dede Bostian. The APAL bicycle rodeo has become a yearly tradition in Albany. This year funds were provided by the City of Albany’s Safe Routes to Schools grant as well as donations from many local businesses and private citizens. Thank you to our wonderful sponsors: • Albany Bowl • Almost Everything Communications • Safeway • Sugata Japanese Restaurant Raffle prizes were provided by: • Lawrence Hall of Science • Oakland Zoo • Powell's Sweet Shoppe • Bay Area Discovery Museum • Scandia Family Center • Aquarium of the Bay • Oakland Ice Center • Lindsay Wildlife Museum • Cartoon Art Museum Volunteers from the Albany High School Kiwanis Key Club assisted with registration, helmet distribution, and the confidence course. The bicycle rodeo is a great opportunity for the young people of Albany to learn about bicycle safety and to enjoy spectacular stunt riders. We hope to see everyone at next year’s rodeo.
