Annual Albany Donation Drive Begins

The City of Albany is collecting coats, toys and food in annual donation drive. A new recipient has been added to the list this year – the city's temporary shelter for the homeless at Albany Bulb.

The City of Albany has launched its annual donation drive, with a new name on the list of recipients this year – the city's temporary homeless shelter at Albany Bulb.

"We are collecting new toys, clean used or new coats, canned/jarred or dry food (non-perishable) throughout the holiday season," according to an announcement on the city website.

"Items will be donated to Operation Dignity, a local non profit working with the City, for distribution at the Albany Temporary Transition Shelter, the Bay Area Rescue Mission, and the Alameda County Food Bank."

The Temporary Transition Shelter is the 6-month shelter that the city is preparing for the soon-to-be-evicted people living in illegal encampments on the Albany Bulb.

The prefabricated sections of the 30-bed shelter arrived on Monday, and the city is working on the furniture, showers and other amenities with an anticipated opening sometime during the week of Nov. 18, according to City Clerk Nicole Almaguer.

The city listed the following locations for donation bins:

  • Albany City Hall - 1000 San Pablo Avenue
  • Albany Community Center Lobby - 1249 Marin Avenue
  • Albany Senior Center Lobby - 846 Masonic Avenue (food only)
The donation drive runs from Nov. 4 to Dec. 20.-----------------
