The Bay Area saw record low temperatures this morning, Friday, and is expected to stay cold through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Four homeless people died in Santa Clara County due to exposure to cold weather conditions, the county medical examiner's office announced today.

Based on results of autopsies, the people succumbed from hypothermia, according to the medical examiner's office. The names, ages and genders of the individuals are not yet being released.

Low temperatures throughout the Bay Area hit new records or tied old ones this morning and ranged from 22 degrees in Gilroy to 40 degrees in downtown San Francisco, according to weather service figures.

Rain is expected tonight, starting in the North Bay and moving south, with snow at higher elevations and in some inland areas.

Freezing temperatures are expected to return by late Saturday night and into Sunday morning, and a freeze warning has been issued for the entire Bay Area aside from San Francisco.

Freezing temperatures are expected again on Sunday night and into Monday, forecasters said.

Drivers are warned to expect icy roads, especially at higher elevations, and limited visibility in some areas Friday and Saturday. In addition, residents should be aware of the risk of hypothermia for people and animals staying outdoors overnight.
