Fallen Limb Damages Car Near Albany High

The windshield of a station wagon parked on Key Route Boulevard near Albany High was smashed this morning when a limb from one of the street's large conifers fell on it. Bystanders said the car belongs to a student at the school.

A large limb broke off one of the conifers on Key Route Boulevard near Albany High School this morning, Wednesday, and smashed the windshield of a parked station wagon.

Bystanders said the limb snapped off about 10:35 a.m. It crashed down on a gray Subaru Outback, shattering the windshield. High school students at the scene said the car belonged to a student.

The break could be related to the rain, heavy at times, that's been falling since Tuesday.

The tree is a Cedrus deodora, or Deodar cedar, according to Albany Urban Forester Tony Wolcott.

The limb fell from one of the large conifers that grow in the wide median of Key Route between Washington Avenue and Thousand Oaks Boulevard. The vehicle was parked on the northbound side of the street next to the median, just south of Washington Avenue.

The northbound lane was closed to traffic while an Albany Fire Department employee used a chain saw to cut away the part of the limb on the Subaru.
