Get Out: Bike Benefit, Skill Share Returns, Baroque at St. Alban's and More

Every week Albany Patch highlights five great events you won't want to miss. Get out there and enjoy!

Drumming with bike parts, drumming at the museum—with all this wonderful noise, you'll want to take some time to meditate. After you've contemplated your place in this world, you'll want to make yourself useful by learning a new skill with your neighbors. Afterwards, wrap up the weekend with some lively Baroque music at St. Alban's.

Here are the weekend highlights from Albany and just a bit beyond. 


  • Where/When: The David Brower Center, 2150 Allston Way, Berkeley. Thursday, 6-9 p.m.
    Why Go: Meet the EBBC's newest board member, bid on bikes, eat dinner from The Bread Workshop, and listen to one amazing drummer, Daniel Yasmin, incorporate bicycle parts into his drumming.

  • Where/When: Oakland Museum of California, 1000 Oak St., Oakland. Friday, 5 p.m.
    Why Go: African drummer CK Ladzepko will join composer Anthony Brown to add some rhythm to your Friday night. But that's not all. Jazz, DJ's, a history talk and delicious local food complete this special evening.

  • Where/When:
    , 1249 Marin Ave., Albany. Sunday, 2-5 p.m.
    Why Go: Beer making, rain barrel making, terrarium building, embroidery, birding in Albany, knitting and plumbing irrigation basics. Have we covered everyone here? If you don't yet think that the Albany Community Center is the best around, come to this workshop and you will be changed. And the best part is...

  • Where/When:
    , 1501 Washington Ave., Albany. Sunday, 7:30 p.m.
    Why Go: Hear the music of Handel, Scarlatti and Corelli performed on authentic baroque instruments, and by soprano Laura Heimes. These concerts at St. Alban's offer an incredible opportunity to hear wonderful classical music.

    Why Go: Welcome spring, reflect on the past season and make meditation a new habit at the Priory with the morning service, or the later Dharma class. You'll want to make sure you've taken the Thursday Meditation Instructions class at 6:45 p.m. before you attend the services.
