Get Out: Celebrate Women's Day, Bid for Education, Dance to Zydeco and More

Every week Albany Patch highlights five great events you won't want to miss. Get out and enjoy!

There are two great events to attend this weekend if you're looking to celebrate Women's History Month. Marin parents should get those Moonlight Auction ticket forms turned in. Get your dancing shoes on and get yourself to the Ashkenaz.


  • Where/When:
    . Friday, 7-8:30 p.m.
    Why Go: Gathering Tribes celebrates International Women's Day with an evening of poetry by Native American women. The event will benefit the anthology Turtle Island to Abya Yala.
    Pricing: Free


  • Where/When:
    Harrison and Eighth streets, Berkeley. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    Why Go: Help restore native species to and meet some likeminded individuals from Albany, Berkeley and the surrounding areas. This is the last Codornices work party of the month.
    Pricing: Free

  • Where/When:
    . Saturday, 6:30-10 p.m.
    Why Go: Hang out with teachers and parents of Marin and bid on some amazing items, from local gift certificates to vacation rentals in Maui.
    Pricing: $30 in advance; $40 at the door


  • Where/When:
    Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center, 1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley. Saturday, 6:30 p.m.
    Why Go: The Ashkenaz is featuring two of its most popular bands, Baba-Ken and the Afro-Groove Connexion, as well as Motordude Zydeco. Even if the bands don't sound familiar, when the Ashkenaz starts dancing, it means business. Come and support one of the few world music venues in the East Bay.
    Pricing: $15-$30 sliding scale

  • Where/When:
    . Saturday, 7:30-10 p.m.
    Why Go: This short film festival highlights local female filmmakers and aims to promote awareness about women's issues today. The fundraiser will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund, the El Cerrito High School Leadership Club and World Neighbors. Want a discount? Check out the Goldstar coupon for the festival.
