Letter to the Editor: Oh, the Places We Can Go!

Albany and its environs host many a wonderful place to explore, especially if you like cycling and open space.

My son was on Spring Break last week, and I took a day off so we could ride our bikes around Albany and Berkeley.

First we visited a few street trees, subjects of tree removal requests, in my role as .

Then we went down to the and through  talking about, and looking at, where the trail might go some day.

Went by the and verified that there are a few bike racks there, seemingly haphazardly and lately placed.

Then we visited the newly dedicated Berkeley Meadows. Nice!

Lunch at Sea Breeze.

Then over the bike bridge to the Aquatic Park. There are some proposals for development close to the park, and I wanted to re-familiarize myself with the area. Lyle got a chance to run around the playground.

I checked my email on my phone and saw a message about the between Albany and Berkeley, and so we checked it out. Really nicely done with a narrowed street and planted swales to catch storm water runoff before it hits the creek. And the .

I checked out the area between Eighth and 10th streets, and lamented that the creek restoration and path between them is blocked because of the ballfields.

A short while later, cycling through , I noticed all the other currently vacant UC lands, and began to wonder about getting UC to move and preserve the ballfields...

Finally, we caught a glimpse of our display in the window on Solano on the way home.

I was so pleased we could see and do so much on our bikes, and that our area is so rich in things to do and see. It was as good as any day trip to some "tourist" destination.
