Meet Some of Our Albany Patch Blogging Team

We've had a lot of interest, but there's still room for you! Just email me at emilier@patch.com if you'd like to get involved.

You'll be hearing from more of your neighbors and friends in Albany Patch's new blogging section, AKA "Local Voices." More than 20 people have signed up to write about everything from baking (with local ingredients) and parenting, to getting around town sans auto, and lots more.

We've already heard from five of them. Read on to find out more (in their own words).

Sylvia Paull was born in Frankfurt, Germany, right after WWII, so that makes me a boomer babe. Reported about science for UC Office of the President in the '70s and worked for a high-tech startup in the '80s. Started a high-tech women's networking organization, Gracenet, in the '90s, that led a successful campaign to eliminate sexist advertising in tech media. Now host a monthly tech lunch at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley with the Berkeley Startup Cluster and a monthly Last Friday Ladies Lunch at the Hillside Club, also in Berkeley. Am a core member of and on the board of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition, which promotes bicycling for everyday transportation and happiness. .

Laurie Roberts is a mom, wife, volunteer, and all-around troublemaker, in the nicest truth-will-set-you-free kind of way. She has lived in Albany for 14 years in the same little house, even though the number of inhabitants has grown from two to five (if you count the needy girl-cat). Laurie enjoys being a judo/baseball/basketball mom, cooking, knitting, working in the yard (even though it doesn't look like it), and hanging with the folks in her oh-so-cool neighborhood. When she's not in Albany, she's busy doing the education thing in a place she can ride her bike to. and .

Moriah VanVleet moved to Albany in 2005 and has been delighted to live here ever since.  When not in her office at UC Berkeley, she can be spotted walking Solano with her husband, baking sweet treats in her kitchen, or making jewelry for her Etsy page.  She holds an MA in the Great Books, and she greatly values the humanities, creative arts, and learning about other people – from next-door neighbors to cultures across the globe! .

Dan Hess joined the  staff in February 2010 and loves the library. Great readers abound in this community and people of all ages ask the most interesting questions. Dan completed library school while working here. Many "Albany moments" made their way into library school papers, so Dan thank everyone from the bottom of my transcript! The blog will discuss all the meaningful programs, magical books and hilarity that happens at the library. .

Wayne Wolcott was born in Vancouver, B.C. in the wee hours of the morning, delivered by Seventh Day Adventist nurses. He once was lost in the North Vancouver woods near Capilano Suspension Bridge, but he got better. When he was 5 he transferred down to California. All told he has spent half his life in British Columbia and half his life in California. He thinks West Coast. Wayne believes in water, living close to it, on islands if possible. He likes to vacation in Baja California and any Asian island. He has a teaching degree and still tutors in math and English. .
