Patch Picks: Summer Camp on the Brain

Albany has some this year, as many of you discussed last week. Here are a few more favorites nearby.

  1. Albany Community Center Summer Camp (Camp Friendship) is stuffed with field trips and outings based on weekly themes. No two days are the same. Morning and afternoon snacks are included with fees.
    Location: . Trips are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Mondays are bowling and Fridays are on-site movies.
    Hours: A full day is 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; no extended care is required.
    Ages: 6-12
    Price: $200/week for residents of Albany; $210/week for non-residents

  • Albany YMCA Summer Camp offers dozens of multi-activity and focused camps including Lego, karate, gymnastics, cooking, Star Wars, rodeo, biking, science, digital film, carpentry, dance, fencing (it goes on and on!).
    Location:  multi-purpose room
    Hours: A full day is 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; no extended care is required.
    Price: With your (minimum) annual YMCA membership of $25, your children are eligible to attend these camps. Prices vary by age and subject matter. Full weeks range from $210 to $310. Half days also available.
    Ages: Entering grades K through 11

  • Steve and Kate's is a multidisciplinary camp with a unique kid-driven agenda. The facilities are impressive. With a film studio, recording studio and performing arts studio, kids can experiment with being in front of and behind the camera. All meals and snacks are organic and included with tuition.
    Locations: There are 18 Bay Area locations of Steve and Kate's, but the ones in the 510 are in central Berkeley and the El Cerrito hills.
    Hours: Doors are open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., but you can use any portion of the day within that window.
    Price: Pay by the day for $75/day. Twenty-day passes are discounted at $1,200. Unlimited access for the summer costs $2,100.

  • Cal Youth Camps provides multi-sport and sport-specific camps led by the energetic counselors from UC Berkeley. Red Cross swimming lessons are available. Kids will be knackered by the end of the day.
    Location: Berkeley's Strawberry Canyon Recreation Area
    Hours: A full day is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Extended care is offered for $15/time slot/day (morning (7:30-9 a.m.), or evening (4-5:30 p.m.) .
    Price: Explorer camp, for ages 5-6, is $240 week based on a two-week commitment. Other age groups have different rates and offer a half-day option. See info for Blue Camp multi-sport for cubs (age 7-8), bears (age 9-10) and grizzlies (age 11-13).
    Ages: 5-13

  • Sarah's Science Summer Camp offers themed science weeks with topics like Ninja Science and Light it Up! Days include outdoor fun as well. Once-a-week swimming.
    Location: The Berkeley site will be at Tilden Park with swimming at Lake Anza.
    Hours: Weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Extended care: 8-9 a.m. and 3-5:30 p.m.
    Price: $315/week for core program; $20/week for before-care; $60/week for after-care. Discounts for multiple-weeks and siblings.
    Ages: 5-10 campers; 11-15 for CIT (counselors in training)
