Red Flag Warning for East Bay Hills from Weather Service

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning of possible dry lightning and thunderstorms that could start fires in the dry East Bay hills.

The National Weather Service said late today, Monday, that a "red flag warning" remains in effect in the East Bay hills until at least 11 a.m. Tuesday.

An "Urgent Fire Weather Message" issued by the agency at 5:01 p.m. warned of dry lightning and possible thunderstorms.

A red flag warning "means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now ... or will shortly," according to the Weather Service. "A combination of dry fuels and lightning could result in numerous fire starts."

Under such conditions, fires can start "even with storms that are wet," the agency said.
