Weekend Things: Huichol Art, Family Cycling, Arts & Green 2011 and More

It's finally time for the Albany Arts & Green Festival, but there's so much more happening Sunday, you may have a hard time choosing one.

Here's your weekly guide to what's going on in Albany and a bit beyond. 

Friday


  • You may have ThisHood.com, and now you can meet its creators, Albany resident Dror Matalon and Charlie Tripp, a former city resident. Learn more about the site and come with any questions or concerns.

Saturday


  • This Saturday and Sunday, will welcome Luciano Valdez, a yarn, bead and jewelry artist who lives in a Huichol ceremonial center in the Sierra Madre mountains of Jalisco, Mexico. The area is at risk of being taken over by mining, and this is a chance to learn more about this struggle and the art of the Huichol people.

  • Come to the to hear this group of local singers (including Albany residents) perform a mix of Broadway show tunes, jazz and other popular styles conducted by Tina Harrington.

  • Sunday


    • Get ready for summer with this free bicycling workshop for the whole family in . This event will help you stay safe while riding around town with your kids. There will be skill-building activities, games, a neighborhood bike ride and even free blinking bike lights for participating kids.
      Price: Free


    • Over in Berkeley you can take a class on selecting and growing low-maintenance edible plants in your garden. The class starts at 10 a.m. and the plant sale (which is also a fundraiser for the EcoHouse) starts at noon.
      Price: $20 general, $15 Ecology Center members, no one turned away for lack of funds


  • This annual tour is a chance for native plant gardeners to show off their gardens, answer questions and talk about their creations. Register the day of the tour and view the numerous gardens, five of which are in El Cerrito, Kensington and Albany.
    Price: Free, but registration is required


  • It's that time of the year! Yes, taxes are behind us and now we can truly enjoy spring with music, art and a celebration of green living in Albany. Come out and enjoy all 80 degrees of predicted sunshine this Sunday afternoon.
