A Brief History of Gathering Tribes:

Gathering Tribes opened in October of 1991 in Albany at 1301 Solano Ave. In addition to a long and narrow retail space, this space had a large room in the back where regular and special events were ongoing. There was a "mini pow wow" each month with local dancers and drummers from the north and the south, traditional crafts classes, lectures, poetry and literary events, and artist events.

It was a wonderful time, but not the best retail location so we moved up the street to 1573 Solano Avenue in Berkeley in 1994. This was a much better retail location and we continued to have events with many award-winning Native artists, as well as lectures and literary events. Many new artisans were added to our collection over the 14 years at this location, and the range of items at Gathering Tribes became much more abundant. We have many wonderful memories of this time.

We moved to our present location in 2009, which is right on the southwest corner of Solano Avenue and Santa Fe Avenue in Albany. This location has lots of windows and is filled with light...the best location yet! There is also a large corner area where occasional events can occur outsite. We still have many events, from one to four each month. It's been exciting to bring award-winning Native American artists, jewelers and sculptors to Gathering Tribes so that our customers can get a first hand experience of these talented artisans who have come from as far north as Alaska, as far south as Costa Rica, and as far east as the Mohawk Nation. Indeed, Gathering Tribes is an expression of the prophecy of the Eagle of the North and the Condor of the South coming together under one roof!
