Bites Nearby: Mmm, Thai Noodle House

Here's a new Thursday feature that highlights where to eat nearby. Today, arguably the best Thai noodles in the East Bay.

Alameda's  proudly proclaims itself “The Best Noodle House in San Francisco”— and for good reason. I haven't seen it show up on any best of lists, but by my standards it's the tastiest Thai food I've eaten in my four years in the Bay Area.

If you're looking for atmosphere, you might be disappointed. That's not to say the place isn't clean, or that waitstaff isn't friendly and helpful. Because they are. But, with cushioned metal-back chairs and bad late night TV (did I mention they're open until 1 a.m.?), this place may be best suited for the Valentine's Day rebels among us.

King of Thai cooks are generous with small but mighty chilis and spices, so if you've caught a cold, head straight here to slurp down the brothy but hearty duck soup or the lemongrass favorite, Tom Yum. Nose extra stuffy? Ask the waiter for a jar of phrik nam pla, which is extremely hot green chilis fermented in fish sauce. You will find that the spoon it's served with is very small – this is not an accident. This stuff is fierce, so measure and taste carefully.

Enjoy carefully, and don't forget to tell us what you thought in the comments. While you're at it, what's your favorite Thai spot around?

Another example of more balanced reporting from Berkeleyside article:Read More http://www.berkeleyside.com/2013/05/17/uc-berkeley-seeks-funds-to-cut-down-22000-non-native-trees/. Some of the comments are useful especially about glyphosphate. The author of the article even used his own name.

The source cited in this announcement states up to 1,400 gallons of herbicide possibly includingRead More Roundup might be used rather than 14,000 gallons of Roundup will be used. Not that I am in favor of dosing the environment with petrochemicals, but I do like to make decisions based on facts. I also have to wonder about the accuracy of the source given that it is an opinion piece rather than an article.

And now for the more balanced reporting: "But U.C. Berkeley wants to remove most of its 22,000Read More eucalyptus and acacia trees, then restore native species like they did in the Claremont Canyon." From this article: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/east_bay&id=9107025

I wish I were there I am teaching adults about professional problem solving skills. I would haveRead More invited the occupiers if I could!

If you are upset about how the rightwing has been attacking President Obama with lies and hyperbole,Read More you should be just as upset about how the Green Tea Baggers of OTF are attacking Albany. Their attempt to derail plans we citizens negotiated and agreed to will harm our schools and our quality of life if it succeeds.
