Your Own Words: Cell Phone Coverage In Albany

Is it swell or does it stink? Who's the best carrier and why?

An August CNN story took a look at area cell phone coverage, particularly the challenges Bay Area folks face with AT&T phones.

In a piece for CNN Tech, contributing writer Dan Frommer wrote that, rather than being a nationwide problem, AT&T reception is "just bad for the wrong people in the wrong places -- mostly tech- and media-types in New York and San Francisco, California."

The reason? "There's a huge concentration of Apple iPhones, owned by tech- and media-savvy folks who demand a ton of bandwidth, and love to complain loudly on Twitter and in the press. And there are tall buildings, landlords and construction processes that make running a wireless network more challenging."

Part of the problem, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, is that it takes years to get new towers in the Bay Area, Frommer wrote. In other markets, a new tower can go up in as few as three weeks.

After looking at national customer turnover data, Frommer concluded that reception likely is not as bad in other parts of the country; the company has seen record lows as far as people leaving for other cell providers.
