Eighty Percent of Relationships End in Sweat Pants

A local psychotherapist talks about what the keys are to a good relationship. Do you agree?

Eighty percent of relationships end in sweatpants. I saw that quote on a Netflix envelope. It inspired me to think about what makes relationships work.

For me the things that are needed for a happy successful relationship are:

     1. A sense of humor
     2. Shared values
     3. Gratitude

I think a sense of humor is key because, if we can't laugh with our partners, it may mean we are taking things too seriously. Laughter is a way to enjoy being together. Part of sustaining a relationship is being able to be ourselves without censorship. If you aren't able to be authentic in your relationship then you aren't able to fully emotionally connect to your partner.

Shared values are important because values are what we set our goals from. If you have different values about money, then your goals regarding your savings, etc., are going to be in constant conflict. Compromise is a key to relationships, but it is hard to compromise against your core values.

To me gratitude is the most important factor in a good relationship. How often do you say "Thank you" to your partner? Do you notice the little things that they are doing for you? Are you grateful to have a partner in your life? You can wear the sweatpants and be comfortable, but you also need to be engaged emotionally with your partner and not complacently sitting on the couch and watching television with them.

What do you think the keys to successful relationships are?
