Help AHS Students buildOn in Nepal With Rubio's Fundraiser (Thursday!)

Help Albany High buildOn raise $30,000 by Dec. 20, starting at Rubio's this Thursday afternoon.

Remember the recent Patch article about to build a school in Nepal this spring? I’m sure you all do (“Albany High Students Hope to Build School in Nepal (With Your Help!)”), but I’ll recap anyways.

buildOn is a nonprofit organization that provides community service opportunities for high school students and, furthermore, is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy in developing nations not only through funding the building of schools in those nations, but through directly sending students to the countries to assist in the building of the schools.

This year, Albany has been designated as what’s called an independent chapter; although community service still has a presence, we’re focusing on raising the money to build an entire primary school in Nepal. The goal is to fund the school and then send a team of 18 students to actually help with construction.

Unfortunately and/or fortunately for us, our deadline just got real: We need to have the school funded—$30,000 raised—by Dec. 20, at the end of this year.

We have a plan, but we need the community’s help.

We have one event coming up ASAP: Thursday Nov. 3 (this week!), , 3-7 p.m.; print out the attached flyer and bring it in—20% of what you spend will go directly to us!

Beyond that, look out for a few upcoming events; details on all forthcoming!

  • An upcoming event with Pasta Pomodoro—date to be announced!
  • The BUY A BRICK campaign—$10 for a brick (a.k.a. cinder block) that’s gonna go right to the school!
  • A raffle! (With or without an accompanying event!)

We’ll keep you updated through here, but for now we hope to see you out at Rubio’s on Thursday!
