Dinner With Albany Contest for Tweet-Length Toasts

Nearly half the dinner's 300 tables have been reserved already.

Albany's second city-wide communal dinner will kick off with a tweet-length toast crafted by a city resident with a talent for precision.

The contest for toasts no longer than 140 characters will run through Sept. 21. Dinner with Albany takes place Sept. 25.

Organizers already have sold 125 tables of the 300 on the map. Tables seat six and cost $28.

Solano Avenue will be closed to traffic, covered with canopy lights, filled with dining tables and open to city dwellers, who are invited to bring their own meals or purchase food from nearby restaurants for an event designed simply to bring people together.

"It's all about the community and the businesses on Solano," said organizer Putzer of the Recreation & Community Services Department. 

The first Dinner With Albany took place in honor of the city's centennial in 2008. About 2,000 people participated. Putzer said she'd love to see even more join in this year. 

, likely will participate with a magnetic poetry project in honor of the city near Stannage and Solano avenues before the meal.

Solano will be closed from San Pablo Avenue to Masonic Avenue on Saturday Sept. 25. The event runs from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Neither pets nor heating elements are allowed. For more information, visit Dinner With Albany online
