Five Things: Financial Aid, Nature's Power and More
Don't go out without checking here first, so you're at least as in-the-Albany-know as your neighbors, if not more so. One-upmanship is almost as good as chocolate.
Wednesday's child is full of woe. -- Third line of an English nursery rhyme, 1838.
- Absolutely crucial if you are considering college is financial aid. So plan to attend the Financial Aid Information Night tonight at Albany High School. This is a must-not miss.
- Singers of all ages, lend your voices! Wednesday nights bring "Sing Thing Family Fireside Folksinging." Bring your kids and try some new tunes.
- Did you experience Sunday's power outage? Almost 4,000 Albany and Berkeley residents lost power Sunday afternoon, although most were charged up again by 3:15 p.m. Officials said it was caused by rain, but we had one report it was actually caused by a goose. Clearly the Greek god Zeus had a hand in this, or perhaps it was the Aztec god Tlaloc, who threw down lightning bolts to earth. Always appease the gods.
- Nature most powerful often comes in the form of an earthquake, which will cause more than a power outage. To mitigate the effects of a major quake, take a look at the Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety. This guide is chock full of helpful suggestions, ways to care for yourself and your family and resources for more information.
- Nature makes itself felt in another way with, sigh, again, the aging Baby Boomers -- we just can't escape the inexorable march of time. But the Senior Center is doing its best to make this transition easier for us. Don't miss the Neighbor 2 Neighbor Workshop: Aging in Place at the Senior Center.
