Last Week in Albany: Music in the Park, Egging Gone Wrong, Codornices Creek and Call for Letters to the Editor

School's getting going and the city is gearing up for a busy September, with Music in the Park, the Solano Stroll and Dinner with Albany.

There was no shortage of happenings in Albany last week, as the weather stayed warm, students settled into classes and the city kicked off weekly free concerts at Memorial Park.

Last week was big for creeks, with a story, photo gallery and video on the Codornices Creek restoration project. Dinner with Albany announced a contest for tweet-length toasts. The winner will get to read his or her toast before the event. University Village kicked off the semester with a fair to welcome new families.

In the arts, Music in the Park started at Memorial, Albany had a fundraiser by Albany High alum Jonathan Sandberg and we took at a look at local book groups. Our "Where in Albany" game continued to entertain. We learned about Albany's poet laureate and stated a new feature on local architecture.

In honor of next weekend's Solano Stroll, Karen Sorensen looked back at how the stroll started. We continued to list of local yard sales (did you pick anything up?). Dorothy Brown continued to develop the "On San Pablo" photo feature.

Some of our more fun features included a silly "Who's Who" about a local pup, and Mustafa Shaikh's video on why people love the Solano Stroll.

In terms of public safety, police reported on the year's DUIs and an egging incident apparently got out of control during "Freshman Friday." Police found a machine gun and arrested a parolee after authorities said he tried to carjack a victim in Richmond.

In school news, the sports boosters club is under pressure to find new leadership and the Albany Unified School District will vote on a new logo this week.

We had local sports previews on Albany High's football team, as well as St. Mary's team, and Friday's game against Campolindo. Unfortuantely, neither team won their first game of the season. See the Albany High coverage here, and the St. Mary's story here.

"Who's Who" featured University's Village's Joonie Kim, a look at the Gill Tract with Damon Lisch; Nicole Williams; the aforementioned Lola; and Tom Traynor.
