Gallery: Oh Deer! What's a Gardener to Do?

Some neighbors have been spotting deer all around Albany. How about you? Add your photographs here.

Thank you to Albany resident Suzanne Portnoy, who sent in her photographs in 2010 of several "deer invaders" in her garden. A number of other local residents then added their own images.

We're republishing this gallery in hopes of inspiring a few more of you to add your pictures. (You should see a big button to do so above the gallery.)

Reader Maureen Simmons sent in two great photographs over the weekend to get us started.

There are often deer on Marin Ave running back and forth across this busy street. Drivers, please be careful.

Great reminder, Peggy! I got a couple more deer photos to add as well...

Seeing the deer photos reminds me that I think I saw a coyote skulking along Pierce and Solano two or three days ago around 11 in the morning. Have there been any other reports?

I've observed for years the deer that cross Solano at Tacoma and Ordway Street between 11:00p.m - 12:30 a.m. Chomping their way down to Marin Ave, they cross the busy street and continue along Ordway. Peggy's point is right on since the deer cross right where Marin curves, with limited visibility might I add, and the last thing any non-local motorist might expect to encounter are deer. Most nights they return up Ordway and cross Solano at around 3:00 - 3:30 a.m. Of course the times fluctuate with the seasons, as does the frequency and numbers of deer, probably due to the year round food supply in our front gardens. In '08 - '09 a Doe spent the Winter, I believe, bedding down in the back garden under their bedroom window.

For the gardeners I will add that, you can cross off AGAPANTHUS and CROCOSMIA from your deer-resistant plant list.

I love the new photos and tips you have added. Keep them coming! I'm also curious about coyote sightings...

I for one would welcome deer in my yard. If you don't feel the same you can go to Past Time Hardware and by a motion sensitive device that puts out a sound that deer don't like. They cost around $45.00 and are very humane. I also have deer whistles on all of our vehicles, the only side effect is that you won't see deer on drives out to the country.
