How long have you lived in Albany? Five years
Why did you and Dana pick Albany? The school district.
What do you do in your free time? I go camping with the [cub] scouts, ride bikes on the Bay Trail and out on the Bulb.
Why do you think scouting is important? I think it gives kids opportunities to learn and do things they might not encounter in their ordinary lives, and it teaches leadership skills. They learn to organize and work as a team.
Were you a scout? I was a scout. When I was growing up, I went through cub scouts and boy scouts up to second class. Second class was the badge I earned, mostly because it was a really small community, and there were only two or three of us still doing anything by that time.
Did you go on some long treks with the scouts? I did get to do a 50-mile hike. We took seven days and went along the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington State. It goes north-south all the way from Canada to Mexico. We were headed south; basically, we started in Mt. Rainier State Park, went south across White Pass (a ski resort area), and ended at Walupt Lake. Before that hike it was just overnight campouts. We did some 10- to 12-mile day hikes with lighter packs; we were figuring out gear – what you thought you needed vs. what you really needed. Then, no matter how well you think you're prepared, the first few days are still really hard!
