Bill Evans presents The Banjo in America @theCenter, Albany Community Center

Eight five-string
banjos, no waiting in this special family friendly concert event with "Banjo for Dummies" author and local favorite Bill
Evans. Tracing the banjo from its West African roots to the New World, Bill
performs musical examples from the 1700’s to the present day on a variety of
vintage instruments, ranging from a West African ekonting to mid-19th century and early 20th century
instruments to a modern bluegrass banjo. From an 18th century African dance tune
to the music of the Civil War, and from early 20th century ragtime to folk and
bluegrass banjo styles to Bill’s own incredible original music, Bill’s
performances illuminate as well as entertain, exposing audiences to over 250
years of American music. In the last two years, Bill has performed all across
North America, Canada, England and Germany and has appeared with the San Francisco Symphony and on A
Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor
. His 2012 CD In
Good Company
topped three international folk and bluegrass charts and
was named to many “Best of 2012” lists. This is the Albany debut of Bill's solo show! Tickets $10 adults at the door. Info at 510-528-5710.
