Albany Police Collect 145 Toys in Inaugural Toy Drive

Donors gave dozens of new, unopened toys to the Albany Peace Officers Association inaugural Toy Drive today in front Target. The toys were collected for Shriners Hospital for Children.

Albany police officers and a half dozen helpers received 145 toys from donors in their first holiday Toy Drive, held in front of Target this afternoon, Saturday, according to Police Detective Chris Beck.

The effort – from noon to 5 p.m. – was sponsored by the Albany Police Officers Association, also known as the Albany Peace Officers Association.

"Thank all of you for your support as the POA gets more involved in the communities in which we serve," Beck said in a email tonight reporting the results of the drive.

"The toys were delivered directly to Shriner's Hospital tonight," he said.

Beck told Patch this year's drive was "the first annual" drive and that the association plans to continue it next year.

Even though temperatures in the sun were relatively warm this afternoon, the officers and volunteers wore coats and jackets against the chill of several hours in the shadow of the large Target store.
