Cougars Topple Eureka in 1st Round of Volleyball Playoffs

The Albany High girls volleyball team got off to a strong start in the regional tournament playoffs tonight, Wednesday, when the Cougars overpowered the visiting squad from Eureka High School.

Cheers erupted from the Albany High School gym at 8:19 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, when the Cougars volleyball team scored the winning match point in their 3-0 sweep of Eureka High School.

The victory came in the first round of the play-offs for the North Coast Section tournament, consisting of schools from the Bay Area north to the Oregon border.

The ending scores showed that the Eureka team, whose home court is a 3-1/2 hour drive away, faced a formidable opponent. Albany won the three games 25-19, 25-12, 25-16.

Senior Amber Erhahon led the Cougars in kills with 14, while sophomore Jasmine Assia topped the assists' column with 9, according to MaxPreps.com.

The match gave Albany a 22-3 season record so far, and left Eureka with an 18-14 record.

Albany next faces Miramonte (15-11) in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday at home. The winner of that match advances to the quarterfinals.

The Albany team competes in Division III of the NCS. There are six divisions for girls volleyball that are divided according to school size.
