Chin-Drenching, High-Speed Watermelon Chomping

What better way to wish America a happy birthday on a warm summer day than to kiss good table manners goodbye and gobble down chunks of juicy watermelon as fast as you can? That's what some folks did Thursday in Albany.

As you can see in the accompanying video, competitors in the watermelon-eating contest at Albany's Fourth of July festival Thursday exhibited more gusto and single-minded purpose than did the somewhat distractable participants in the Diaper Derby.

The video shows contestants in two of the divisions, young teens and those aged 17-plus, attacking their task with relish.

For a contrast in competitive styles displayed at the annual event in Memorial Park, you can see a segment of the Diaper Derby in this article: "Totally Unflappable under Pressure – Albany Diaper Derby."

Coverage and photos of other activities at the city's "Green, Red, White and Blue Celebration" can be found in this article: "Beards, Babies, Ponies, Eats & Much More at Albany July 4th Fest."

And a report and photos from the event's classic car show hosted by the Albany Police Activities League (APAL) can be found on APAL's Blog: "Albany Police Activities League Car Show Brings Out Classics."
