Holiday Glee on Solano Ave. – Festive Pop-up Sing-along

A "pop-up" sing-along of holiday favorites packed a corner on Solano Avenue with a festive, candle-lit gathering of about 60 or so people Friday night. The "Songs on Solano" event was sponsored by the City of Albany.

A small crowd of candle-holding singers packed the sidewalk on Solano Avenue Friday night, joining their voices, and surprising passing motorists, in a sing-along of holiday favorites.

About 60 or so people showed up for the festive "Songs on Solano" event sponsored by the City of Albany on the southwest corner of Solano and Stannage Avenue.

Under the enthusiastic direction of Mary Stocker, who heads the Albany Community Chorus and the Albany High School choir program, the gathering sang a variety of secular songs of the season, including "Twelve Days of Christmas," "Jingle Bells" and "Deck the Halls," along with selections reflecting multi-cultural and/or religious themes, including "Feliz Navidad," "Oh Hanukkah" and "Mele Kalikimaka."

Small booklets containing the songs were passed around, and musical accompaniment was added by a keyboard player. Roasted chestnuts and hot chocolate offered seasonal flavor and a bit warmth against the evening chill.
