On Your Marks, Get Set, Crawl! Diaper Derby & Other July 4th Fun in Albany

Baby races, facial hair competition, watermelon-eating contest, free ice cream, classic car display, reptile show, the Lions Club pancake breakfast, human hamster balls – it must be the annual Albany 4th of July celebration in Memorial Park.

If the past is guide to the present, the third annual Diaper Derby at Albany's Fourth of July festival Thursday is likely to be a photo finish – assuming that the contestants actually finish the short course.

In any case, we guarantee that there will be lots of photos by parents and other fans of the diaper-clad babies and toddlers whose attention to contest expectations may prove a bit wobbly.

The city's free "Green, Red, White & Blue Celebration" at Memorial Park also includes a beard and moustache contest in two divisions – one for real facial hair and one for fake.

The watermelon-eating contest also ranks one of the one of the day's highlights, as does the free ice cream from the Albany Chamber of Commerce.

Other attractions include the annual classic car show hosted by the Albany Police Activities League and the East Bay Vivarium reptile show.

Plus a lot more, including:

  • 3-legged Races
  • Egg Toss
  • Sack Races
  • Hippity Hop Races
  • Pony Rides
  • Mega Rock Wall
  • Petty Zoo
  • Jump Houses
  • Game Tent (Ping Pong, Air Hockey, Foosball)
  • Dunk Tank
