Peggy Thomsen Will Enforce Bicycle Safety Laws - Illustrated!

Peggy was nice enough to call and tell us she enjoyed one of my cartoons. Here's her payback!

Patch readers have demanded more direct action from our city council regarding bicylists. Most of the candidates seem to be willing to let the police department take the lead.

One candidate is ready to leap out of the pack: Completely unanswerable to the powerful Albany Strollers and Rollers consortium, Peggy Thomsen is seen here tackling an errant biker as he cruises through a stop sign.

Peggy called and left a message while we were out at Baker Beach yesterday. She said that I must have known she needed a laugh that morning. The funniest part is that Elsbeth just said as we were driving home past all the lawn signs that Peggy hadn't called about this cartoon, maybe she was insulted. When we walked in the door and saw a message on the machine I said, "See, it must be from Peggy". Looking forward to meeting her.

Anybody who mentions 'reckless bicycling' or bicycle stop sign running or any picking on cyclists, without similar (stronger) admonitions for cars that regularly run through limit lines, and exit driveways without coming to a complete stop makes me angry. Grrr. I demand more direct action regarding pedestrian safety. Safety from smoke belching two-ton death machines.

I will work on it, Robert! I live by the new Aquatic Center and definitely more SUVs and European luxury cars run the stop signs on Portland than bikes - and they are certainly more of a menace. Not sure about Peggy tackling a car though.
