Hello, Delhi! (And sayonara, sushi) [UPDATE]

Sushi Solano, the Japanese restaurant that has occupied the garishly Persian-decorated old Khayyam's for several years, has shuttered up. The sign announces that soon Delhi Diner will take its place, which may make the decor at least a bit closer in color to the fare. (See the new restaurant's rather gorgeous splash page at DelhiDiner.net, which provides no more details on menu, schedule, or anything.)

Sushi Solano had one of the best Japanese lunches around. And now its departure reduces the Japanese contingent to 3 (is that right? not counting places on San Pablo, and there are 2 I know of). With the Delhi Diner coming (and I'm assuming it's an Indian restaurant), that will give Solano Avenue 4 Indian restaurants, and then you have to add in at least 4 more Nepal/Pakistani places (again too lazy to turn the corners at San Pablo). If I were a restaurateur I might go for more burgers or pizzas, or better a burger/pizza joint. Or maybe an organic vegetarian open at night (Cafeina closes at 6.) I wonder if the folks who do Mary's Pizza Shack have ever looked at Solano.

Update: A sign in the window says Delhi Diner is opening Sept 1 at 5 pm, featuring 'elegant ambiance, authentic Indian cuisine, famous Indian hospitality & service along with live world class Indian classical music.' Sounds worth checking out!
