Letter: Join Me Saturday in the Albany Triathlon

It's not too late to sign up for the Albany Triathlon, which takes place Saturday. Albany Patch welcomes guest columns and letters to the editor at albany@patch.com.

In case you've always secretly wanted to do a triathalon, but haven't yet taken the plunge, there's a super easy one coming up right here in Albany.

It is billed as "a beginner-friendly, spectator-friendly event open to anyone age 10 and up. The goal is to promote fitness in the community, raise funds for Albany High School athletic programs, and showcase just how fun a multi-sport event can be!"

When & Where: 7 a.m on Sept. 29, 2012, at Albany Memorial Park, 1325 Portland Avenue. (Details here.)

Course Information: This is a "super sprint" distance triathlon consisting of:

  •      a 400 meter swim followed by
  •      a 10 km bike ride and then
  •      a 3 km run

The swim will take place in the outdoor pool in 15-minute heats of 20 swimmers per heat with two people splitting each lane. Four hundred meters is 17 lengths (25 yards/length) or 8.5 laps (50 yards/lap).

The bike course consists of 11 laps around a 0.55-mile loop on the streets encircling the pool, park and high school.

The run is four laps on the same loop as the bike course, running on the sidewalk.

The transition area (T1 and T2) will be on the pavement near the basketball court just outside of the outdoor pool.
