Albany Historical Society Dedicates "Garbage Wars" Plaque

On April 1, 1908, armed Ocean View residents gathered near this area on Buchanan St. to protest Berkeley's dumping of garbage in Ocean View. Garbage dumps were unpopular due to a regional plague scare. The residents (mostly women) turned away Berkeley's garbage wagons until the sheriff arrived and ordered them to stop. The conflict caused the City of Ocean View (later renamed Albany) to incorporate in the fall of 1908 and outlaw outside garbage dumping.

This is the text of the latest historical plaque donated to the City of Albany by the Albany Historical Society. This plaque is located on the south west corner of San Pablo and Buchanan.

Everyone is invited to the dedication of the plaque on Sunday, June 2 from 2:00 – 3:00. We will be gathering in the East Bay Paint Center parking lot, 909 San Pablo Ave, across Buchanan from the plaque. Light refreshments will be provided by the Albany Historical Society.

The purpose of the Albany Historical Society is to discover, preserve, and disseminate knowledge about the history of the Albany CA area. We encourage local residents to share their memories and knowledge of the past through story telling events and have begun to create a historical walking path in Albany using plaques commemorating important places and people.
