Albany Library Celebrates 100th Birthday in Style

A large crowd gathered on Sunday, January 26, 2014 to celebrate the Albany Library’s 100th birthday and the 20th anniversary of the location on Marin Ave.  Speakers included Assembly Member Nancy Skinner, Mayor Peggy Thomsen, Alameda County Librarian Jean Hofacket, Albany Library Deb Sica, and Congressional Aid Jonathan Gast from Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s office.  Kevin Jenkins ably represented Supervisor Keith Carson.

The celebration which was hosted by the Albany Historical Society, the Friends of the Albany Library, the City of Albany, and the Alameda County Library, drew a large audience from children who enjoyed the puppet show and games to those who remember the library when it was on Solano at the current location of the Albany Y. After the speeches and presentations, including a plaque donated to the library by the Albany Historical Society, there was ample time for visiting and enjoying the “birthday cookies and cupcakes”.

The library staff put together a wonderful exhibit in the display cases in the library of historical library memorabilia.  Be sure to stop and look at It when you next visit the library.
