Albany Rotary Celebrates It's 85th Anniversary

Members of the Albany Rotary Club gathered together on Tuesday, March 18 at Mechanics Bank to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the club.  Joined by family members and Rotary District Governor Steve Lack and Assistant District Governor Fred Collignon, Rotarians toasted the successful history of the Club as they enjoyed sharing memories of their years as members.  Historical memorabilia brought smiles to the faces of those attending.

The Albany City Council presented a proclamation to President Howard McNenny at their meeting on Monday night.  The proclamation read:

WHEREAS, the Albany Rotary Club, a member of Rotary International, was organized in March of 1929; and

WHEREAS, the Albany Rotary Club has provided the citizens of the City of Albany with eighty five (85) years of continuous community service; and

WHEREAS, the Albany Rotary Club has continued to exemplify the motto of Rotary International – “Service Above Self”; and

WHEREAS, the Albany Rotary Club has sponsored or contributed to local projects for the past eighty five (85) years including

·         Joe Villa Scholarships for students graduating from Albany High Schools

·         Albany Little League and Albany Berkeley Girls Softball League sponsorships

·         Dictionary donations to all 3rd grade classrooms

·         Rebuilding Together home improvements

·         Key Route beautification

·         Solano Avenue bench repair and painting

·         Books donated to all AUSD school libraries

·         Donation of par course along the Ohlone Greenway to the City of Albany

·         Rota Care Medical Clinic in Richmond for the uninsured

·         Writer coach connection

·         Literacy project at Golden Gate Fields

·         Albany Senior Citizens Center Building Fund

WHEREAS, the Albany Rotary Club has sponsored or contributed to international projects for the past eighty five (85) years including

·         Rotary International Foundation

·         Worldwide eradication of polio

·         Rota Vision, training doctors to perform eye surgery in less developed countries

·         Kenya Smiles, bringing dental health to children in Kenya

·         Rotoplast – cleft palate surgeries in less developed countries

·         LN-4 hands, hand prostheses to land-mine victims

·         Burkina Faso water and education project in Africa

·         Engineers Without Borders

·         Improvements to schools in Mexico

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that I, Peggy Thomsen, Mayor of the City of Albany, congratulate the Albany Rotary Club on its 85 years, and thank you for your service both locally and globally.
