Albany Education Foundation Welcomes New Teachers

New AUSD teachers were welcomed with grants to help set up their classrooms.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Edith Stone Room at the was filled with both enthusiasm for the new school year and teachers excited to have been hired to work in Albany.

Many of the 's new teachers were welcomed by the (AEF) with money to help set up their classrooms, and bags stuffed with office supplies. Full-time teachers received $200 each, and part-timers received $100.

District leaders, including , Director of Curriculum and Instruction Marsha Brown,  Principal Wendy Holmes, and Marin Principal David Kumamoto also attended the reception to meet and greet the new hires.

Ronnie Davis, Albany Library manager, also welcomed the teachers and explained library programs to help them and their students.

The Albany Education Foundation is a community-based non-profit organization that provides resources for programs in Albany schools. Unlike other groups, which help pay for salaries and teaching positions, AEF helps Albany teachers with grants for projects and field trips.

"We make dreams come true," said Reece Halpern, the group's secretary. "Without that little extra something, those efforts wouldn't happen at all."

Last year’s mini grants ranged from visits to the schools from the Oakland Zoomobile and the Kids for the Bay to sit balls, study carrels, basketballs, mural projects at both Albany Middle and High Schools. Sally Outis Block Grants last year helped fund the as well as the program at AMS. Field trip grants sent students on adventures from Oakland A’s games to science, nature, and arts/cultural experiences.

Mini-grant applications for 2011 are due Oct. 19. Teachers may download applications for these grants on the Albany Education Foundation website, www.albanyeducation.org 

Funds for the mini grant and other Albany Education Foundation programs come from donations by parents, school staff and community members. Two upcoming and fun events to benefit AEF are the third annual on , and at Little Star Pizza where 10 percent of the day’s proceeds are donated to AEF. Your support at these events will help to ensure AEF continue its work for the Albany Schools.
