Albany Police Win Traffic Safety Grant
The Albany Police Department has received a one-year $49,160 state grant to fund safe-driving enforcement efforts and related activities.
The Albany Police Department has been awarded a $49,160 state grant to improve traffic safety. according to a police announcement.
The one-year grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety will pay for programs to enforce safe-driving laws and prevent accidents, said a Police Department press release on Wednesday.
"While traffic deaths from all causes declined by nearly 39% between 2006 and 2010 in California, they rose by 2.6% in 2011," the press release said. "State and federal officials anticipate that figures will show another rise for 2012. DUI deaths remain the largest sector, at nearly 30% of traffic fatalities. Recent trends show increases in two new categories – distracted driving and drug-impaired driving."
Police said the activities to be funded by the grant include:

Specialized DUI and drugged driving training such as Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE)
