Albany Teen Arrested After San Anselmo Crash Into Hydrant

San Anselmo police identified the driver as 18-year-old Avraham Rosenblum.

A recent graduate, and promising high school football player, was arrested in San Anselmo early Sunday morning after police said he crashed into a fire hydrant in his car, then fled. 

The San Anselmo Police Department identified the young man as Avraham Rosenblum, 18, of Albany.

At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, San Anselmo police responded to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Broadmoor Avenue after a report of a hit-and-run vehicle collision with a fire hydrant, according to Sgt. Julie Gorwood.

The caller "heard a vehicle hit something and heard vigorous rushing water," according to the department's press log, then "went outside and saw a lot of water rushing in the street."

Police said a vehicle struck the hydrant, then left eastbound on Sir Francis Drake.

Police officers from the city of Ross located what they determined to be the involved vehicle stopped about a mile away on Greenfield Avenue; it had "moderate front and side damage," according to Gorwood.

A DUI investigation was conducted by San Anselmo police, and Rosenblum was arrested without incident on suspicion of driving under the influence and the hit-and-run traffic collision.  

According to the press log, his blood alcohol content was less than .01. 

(The incident qualified as driving under the influence because Rosenblum is under 21; the legal blood alcohol content limit for adults 21 and over is .08.)

Gorwood said Rosenblum was cited and released. 

According to the San Anselmo police press log, passengers in the young man's car were released to parents.

Rosenblum's vehicle "was towed and later released to the subject's parents."

Rosenblum was the "" in 2010, and was described as "a leader for us on and off the field" by his football coach. In January, his GPA was reported to be "above 3.0."

He said he had hopes of playing college football.

An Albany High list of college destinations from June placed Rosenblum at Laney College in Oakland beginning in fall 2011.
