Early Morning Earthquakes Shake Albany

The U.S. Geological Survey has reported that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0 struck the East Bay early Monday, following right on the heals of a 3.5-magnitude quake in the same location.

The quakes shook an area just north of Albany at 5:33 a.m., according to the USGS. They were followed at 6:03 a.m. by an aftershock with an initial magnitude of 2.0.

The latitude and longitude coordinates provided by the USGS place the epicenter of the temblor in El Cerrito just south of the Mira Vista Country Club.

According to the USGS, as of 6 a.m., 174 Albany residents had reported feeling the quake.

Twitter was also abuzz.

Said robertjm: "Albany Turkeys have now been gobbling for about 15 minutes since we had that Earthquake. Never heard that before."

Said Shelba Delaney: "I wish the earth would have violently shaken me from my slumber about 3 hours later cuz I'm ... wide awake now!"

Local Realtor Ira Serkes: "#Berkeley #Earthquake Rated "James Bond" ..... We were shaken, not stirred. As Tom Lehrer said "Be Prepared" We are ... you?"

Added carleighamalin"Earthquake! Windows shook, Bailey barked a little baby bark, and our poor new upstairs neighbors from VA rethink everything #earthquake."

And Frances Dinkelspiel, of Berkeleyside, added: "The Hayward fault has been so active recently. Better check those#earthquake kits today."
