Max's Liquors Robbed, Co-Owner Hit with Gun

A co-owner of Max's Liquors at San Pablo and Solano avenues in Albany suffered a bleeding cut on his head Monday afternoon when he was hit by a gun in a robbery by two young men, according to another co-owner.

Max's Liquors in Albany was robbed at gunpoint of cash and two bottles of liquor by two young men Monday afternoon, and a co-owner was left bleeding from a cut on his head after being struck with the gun, a second co-owner said.

The robbery took place at 3:42 p.m., when two men who appeared to be in their early 20s entered the business at the corner of San Pablo and Solano avenues and escaped after clearing out the register, said the second co-owner, who was not present at the time. One carried a small handgun, said the second owner, who asked that the owners' names not be used.

The one with the gun hit the first owner on the side of the head, causing a cut that soaked his shirt but that did not require stitches or a visit to the hospital, the other owner said.

Patch has requested information from Albany police about the crime.

After the robbers entered the store, one jumped over the counter and the other came around from the behind, and the gunman forced the owner to the opposite side of the store and ordered him to drop to his hands and knees, the second owner said.

At that moment, while the other robber was behind the counter struggling to open the register, a customer came in and asked for cigarettes, the second owner said. The robber accepted $5 as payment and handed the cigarettes to the customer, who left unaware of what was happening, the second co-owner said.

After finally getting the cash register open, the robbers entered a rear storeroom where they grabbed two bottles of Hennessy and then fled, four minutes after entering, the second owner said.
