Police Calls: Albany High iPhone Thief Seeks Ransom

The Albany police logs for Dec. 23-24 include a vehicle stripped of all four tires on Solano, an iPhone stolen from Albany High by a thief who offered to return it for money and packages stolen from a residence the day before Christmas.

The following information was obtained from the daily incident log and arrest log of the Albany Police Department.

Monday, Dec. 23

Improper license and unregistered vehicle arrest – At 3:27 a.m., police arrested a 42-year-old Oakland man at Buchanan and Polk on suspicion of driving on a suspended or revoked license and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Dry cleaner's post damaged – At 7:12 a.m., police received a report that someone hit a post in the parking lot of Norge Cleaners on San Pablo. Disposition: Case report taken.

All four tires stolen – At 10:19 a.m., police logged a grand theft report of all four tires stolen with the vehicle left on blocks on Solano. Disposition: Case report taken.

Residential burglary – At 12:35 a.m., police received a report of a burglary at an apartment overnight on Marin. Disposition: Case report taken.

Attempted theft – At 3:31 p.m., police received a report of male about 18-20 years old in a white hoodie who attempted to take a package on Curtis. Disposition: Case report taken.

Cell phone thief offers to return it for money – At 4:26 p.m., a person told police that his daughter's cell phone was stolen from the Albany High library on Thursday and that they received a call from someone claiming to have it and wanting money for it. The reporting party would like to make a police report by phone. Disposition: No police action warranted at this time.

Group smoking pot – At 4:47 p.m., police received a report of a group of males smoking marijuana on the west side of Albany Hill, near Bayside Commons apartments on Pierce. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint.

Drunk/disorderly arrest – At 10:57 p.m., police arrested a 21-year-old Willits man at Albany Bowl on suspicion of being under the influence to an unsafe degree or obstructing a public right of way. The arrest followed a 9:53 p.m. report of a customer requesting that police be called regarding an intoxicated subject at the bowling alley.

Tuesday, Dec. 24

Packages stolen – At 8:24 a.m., a resident reported the theft of packages taken from near her back fence on Masonic. Disposition: Case report taken.

Identity theft – At 10 a.m., police logged a report of identity theft filed by a person in the police lobby. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency.

Fictitious instrument (bad check) – At 10:54 a.m., police logged a fictitious instrument (bad check) report involving a tall thin man with a bald head and a female passenger at the Bank of America on Solano. The subject departed when a BART police officer came in to do his own banking. Disposition: Case report taken.

Front license plate stolen – At 11:37 a.m., police received a report of a front license being stolen at an unknown time on Cornell. Disposition: Case report taken.

Person yelling on phone – At 12:40 p.m., police received a complaint about a person yelling on her phone on Adams. Disposition: Responsible/s advised of complaint, will correct situation.

Lost iPhone traced to Vallejo – At 2:44 p.m., police were told that the reporting party's daughter lost her iPhone 5 last Wednesday evening, and it was traced through iCloud to Vallejo. The reporting party might try contacting the Vallejo Police Department. Disposition: Log note only.

Vehicle parked in bike lane cited – At 3:46 p.m., police logged a report of a vehicle parked more than 18 inches from the north curbside inside the bike lane at the U.S. Department of Agriculture facility on Buchanan. Disposition: Miscellaneous violation – citation issued.

Hit and run with damage, suspect arrested – At 8:39 p.m., police logged a report that a red Cadillac hit and damaged a gray mini-van on Talbot. The Cadillac went south toward Solano. Disposition: Arrest made. (Editor's note: This arrest may be the same one reported in the arrest log and described in the next incident below.)

DUI arrest – At 9:16 p.m., police arrested a 62-year-old Albany man in the 800 block of Evelyn Avenue on suspicion of driving under the influence and having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more.

Hit and run with damage – At 9:42 p.m., police logged a report of officer-initiated activity relating to a hit and run with damage on Talbot, with reference to case 13-2276. Disposition: Case report taken. (Editor's note: This may be the same incident described the hit and run case on Talbot above.)
