Police Calls: Dog Bites Person, Trouble with Panhandlers, Sea Lion in Distress at Albany Bulb

The Albany police logs for Aug. 31 - Sept. 1 include a person bitten by a dog, two stolen vehicles, a confrontation with panhandlers that led to an arrest, a piercing noise at University Village and a sea lion in distress at Albany Bulb.

The following information was obtained from the daily incident log and arrest log of the Albany Police Department.

Saturday, Aug. 31

DUI arrest
 – At 12:22 a.m., police arrested a 26-year-old San Pablo woman at Washington and Adams on suspicion of driving under the influence and blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more.

DUI arrest – At 12:59 a.m., police arrested a 26-year-old Fairfield man at the Gilman interchange on suspicion of driving under the influence and blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more.

Prowler warned – At 2:21 a.m., police logged a report of a bald man in a sweatshirt and jeans going around every door on an upstairs balcony of an apartment building on Adams and looking in. Disposition: Miscellaneous violation – warning given.

Injured seal or sea lion at Albany Bulb – At 10:18 a.m., police received a report of an injured seal or sea lion in the upper plateau/northern beach area at Albany Bulb. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency. 

Non-injury accident – At 11:23 a.m., police received a report of a minor, non-injury collision of vehicles at Marin and Masonic. The drivers are going to exchange information. Disposition: Log note only.

Person bit by dog – At 12:46 p.m., police received a report of a person bitten by a dog at Bebe Beauty Salon on San Pablo. No medical is needed. Disposition: Case report taken.

Vehicle window smashed – At 3:35 p.m., police received a report of a vehicle on Jackson with its passenger window smashed. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency.

Bank employees fearful of leaving – At 3:36 p.m., police received a report of a person covered with a blanket and sleeping in a wheelchair at the rear of Mechanics Bank on San Pablo. Employees are fearful of leaving. Disposition: Miscellaneous public service provided.

Campfire under overpass – At 5:37 p.m., police received an anonymous report of homeless-looking subject barbecuing over a campfire on Eastshore under the Buchanan overpass. Disposition: Responsible/s advised of complaint, will correct situation.

Subway burglary – At 9:46 p.m., police logged a report of a burglary at 
Subway on Solano. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency.

LED spotlight response to dog barking – At 10:04 p.m., police received a report of a resident to the rear of the reporting party's yard on Carmel who shines a bright LED spotlight at the reporting party's house whenever the reporting party's dog barks. The reporting party says the light on a shed over the fence and that this has been ongoing for a few months. Disposition: Civil matter – parties advised.

Sunday, Sept. 1

DUI arrest – At 2:41 a.m., police arrested a 38-year-old San Francisco woman at San Pablo and Central on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Recovered stolen vehicle – At 8:30 a.m., police logged a report of officer-initiated activity and a recovered stolen vehicle at Brighton and Stannage. Disposition: Case report taken.

Troublesome panhandlers, drug arrest, – At 9:11 a.m. police arrested a 46-year-old transient male at Buchanan and the East I-80 off-ramp on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine or other controlled substance. The arrest followed a 9:04 a.m. report of a man and a woman sitting and blocking the crosswalk button soliciting for money under the overpass on the west side of the street at Buchanan and I-80. The reporting party asked the pair to push the crosswalk button, and the female started yelling at the reporting party.

Sea lion update – At 9:17 a.m., police received a report of the sea lion at Albany Bulb not looking well today after seeming fine yesterday. Disposition: Matter/persons referred to outside agency.

Stolen vehicle – At 11:13 a.m., police received a report of a vehicle theft sometime overnight on Garfield. Disposition: Case report taken.

Stolen vehicle – At 11:55 a.m., police received a report of a vehicle theft sometime during the past two days at Thunderbird Orthodontic on Stannage. Disposition: Case report taken.

Auto burglary at Sizzler – At 2:25 p.m., police received a report of a vehicle burglary at Sizzler. The victim is standing by her vehicle in the parking lot. Disposition: Case report taken.

Stolen purse located at Target – At 3:56 p.m., a person told police that her purse that was stolen in El Cerrito and her phone is with a subject at Target. She would like the police department's help in getting the phone back. She will be at the police department shortly. Disposition: Miscellaneous public service provided.

Neighbor's light shining into yard – At 9:58 p.m., police received a report from Carmel of a neighbor having a steady light shining into the reporting party's rear yard. The reporting party was advised to contact police anytime he had a problem with this neighbor. Disposition: Log note only.

DUI arrest – Shortly after 10:40 p.m., police arrested a 44-year-old Berkeley woman at San Pablo and Buchanan on suspicion of driving under the influence and blood alcohol level of 0.08% or more.

Piercing noise heard at University Village
 – At 10:52 p.m., police logged a report that resident in University Village are hearing a piercing noise that they feel is coming from the U.S. Department of Agriculture complex on Buchanan. UC Berkeley police request that Albany police check the USDA property to see if the noise can be identified. Disposition: Unable to locate source of complaint.
